Most of us have heard the saying, “With great power comes great responsibility”.  This saying translates well into the technology we use here at KDE.  As most of you probably know, each KDE staff member has the ability to install software and uninstall software on your KDE issued laptop or desktop.   While this level of access is available to you, it can lead to possible issues.

So what is appropriate to install?  There are hundreds of pieces of software successfully installed throughout KDE.  It is impossible to list every acceptable or inappropriate program out there.  However, here are some good guidelines to follow when looking at installing software:

- Make sure that the use of this software does not conflict with the Acceptable Use Policy

- Be sure that the software is work related and required to accomplish your work

- Be sure that the software is licensed appropriately

- Always be sure to have the approval of your Branch Manager or Division Director before installing software

- Avoid installing any Internet toolbars as they can cause problems with Internet Explorer which may interfere with your daily work

If you’re ever in doubt about installing or upgrading a piece of software or you’d like to review the KDE Acceptable Use Policy, please contact the KETS Service Desk at 502-564-2020 or via email at ketshelp@education.ky.gov.
