1. Do a number of students have problems with run-on sentences or sentence fragments?
2. Do most students use a variety of sentence structures (varied beginnings and number of thoughts per sentence)?
3. Do you see a pattern of usage problems, such as subject-verb disagreement?
4. Do students use vivid verbs and precise nouns?
5. Do a number of students have problems with spelling and/or homophone selection, capitalization, or basic punctuation rules?
6. If pieces are word-processed, have the students used spellcheck?
