Middle level grades provide academic and social support to young adolescents (10-15 years old). Generally identified as grades 5-8 there can be other configurations that include other grades. The years between elementary and high school require great sensitivity during this period of life when students experience vast growth in all areas of development: physical, cognitive/intellectual, and social emotional. Experiences in middle grades can set the stage for a student’s future career and education attainment and thus must ensure that the unique developmental needs of this population are addressed through a structured and intentional plan for growth and learning.
